Jaffa, winter of 1914:

Half a year after the outbreak of World War I, the Ottoman Empire forced all foreign subjects living within its territories to accept Ottoman citizenship. But not everyone wanted to become a Turkish citizen — especially since that meant being drafted into the Turkish army. As a result, the authorities decided to deport all foreign subjects from the Empire’s lands.
